2021 offered just five consecutive days of relative calm. On the 6th of January, rioters stormed and breached the US Capitol, laying bare deep divides for the world to see. Meanwhile, as COVID relentlessly gathers pace, the social contract is strained by lockdowns, growing distrust is fanned by disinformation, and support for global cooperation wanes. These social and political fractures are increasingly prevalent in almost all countries around the world; a democratic dissonance lending growing support to populism and more extreme movements. Yet, some hope for cautious optimism remains.

Matthew Goodwin is an academic, bestseller writer and speaker known for his work on political volatility, risk, populism, Europe, elections and Brexit. Amongst other roles, he is Professor of Politics at Rutherford College at the University of Kent. He is the author of six books including the 2018 bestseller National populism: The Revolt Against Liberal Democracy and the 2015 Political Book of the Year, Revolt on the Right, which was long-listed for the Orwell Prize.
